Dec AM Be the first to comment on this article. Dave Perkins I t s now official according to committee chair Silken Laumann that all future winners of the Lou Marsh Trophy will have one thing in common with all past winners they will be human rather than equine. Count the present as having a human face too with the decision from the voter panel yesterday to name Chantal Petitclerc as Canada s athlete of! the year for and if she didn t get this vote she certainly gets these congratulations and deserves them. Her level of achievement not only this year but in her career makes her worthy of any accolade she acquires. This is a champion through and through. Once again there wasn t a unanimous selection and once again there wouldn t have been a bad winner from the short list of finalists that included in no particular order Simon Whitfield Justin Morneau Carol Huynh Jeffrey Buttle Eric Lamaze and Daniel Nestor. Another names were on a larger list that required paring and there were good arguments made for some of them too. There is no shortage of first rate athletic talent in this country. Never is. All that said the name Somebeachsomewhere arose first on the agenda because of a calm and rational campaign begun within the industry to at least get him into the minds if not the pens of Marsh voters. The sensational year old pacer owned in Nova Scotia will surely win all available horse of the year awards but the Marsh committee having never seen a f! our legged representative on the short list before wasn t sure there will ever be a time to start breaking new ground in this area. That wasn t a unanimous decision either but surely will receive more widespread approval than if it had gone the other way. Still it doesn t preclude horse oriented athletes jockeys drivers Lamaze and the jumping set from being considered as individuals for future honours. Once that was straightened out Petitclerc s was the name that after all the others had been batted around kept standing out to enough voters. There is no easy way to argue the merits of equestrian medals versus runs batted in against a doubles tennis ranking and so on. The discussion always is about apples and oranges and after five gold medals in Beijing the pinnacle of a career spent at the top of her game Petitclerc turned out to be the very deserving apple of this committee s eye. National Stay At Home Week
I really have nothing to write about. I ve spent most of today on the couch or in the bathroom with some sort of stomach bug. It woke me up early Sunday morning seemingly with some sort of fever because all of a sudden I was freezing my ass off in my bed looking for a sweatshirt and sweatpants like all of a sudden I was Rip Van Winkle and I just slept until December and a cold front just came in that included ice and snow. I would have gotten out of bed to get more covers or take some Advil but I was JUST. SO. COLD. And as quickly as the shivering and teeth chattering came I was then sweating my ass off like I was having a hot flash like a middle aged woman would be having. And then really I just tossed and turned the rest of the morning before finally moving to the couch to watch TV and toss and turn. In other weekend news I watched the movie Prime on Friday night. It is the one where Uma Thurman is dating some young hottie and describing it in vivid details to her therapis! t Meryl Streep who just happens to be the young man s mother. Have any of you seen it Can you please tell me what that ending was That was the worst ending in history. I watch chick flicks for HAPPY ENDINGS In other television watching news I decided to watch The Biggest Loser . Everyone watches it and I hate to be left out. I remembered why I never watched it in the first place people should not be punished for wanting to lose weight and not losing enough I felt so bad for those people feeling bad that they didn t lose enough when they lost like pounds in a week I am happy to know that the booted teams go home and keep up the working out and eating well and losing weight. That makes me a little happier. As I watch the show eating a tub of ice cream and scarfing down a bag of potato chips. This week is ABC s National Stay At Home Week. Supposedly to save energy by staying home and watching TV. I would like to meet these ABC executives and introduce them to my National Stay ! At Home Week. It lasts all year long. I call it National Sloth Week. Finally I got the very best spam comment today. It was on this post . A post with photos of my adorable niece and nephew. The comment is from landlord home insurance and this person wants to tell me Not bad at all but this topic is rather little of interest. Please do not disappoint your readership. Johnson at the threshold of a place in NASCAR history Richmond TimesDispatch
Jimmie Johnson sat before nine former NASCAR champions too respectful to reflect on his own place in history. In just a few more days he ll likely have a third consecutive championship that will speak volumes to his legacy. But until he wins the Sprint Cup title which should come with an easy Sunday drive at Homestead Miami Speedway Johnson refuses to contemplate matching the feat that Cale Yarborough managed in the s. Yarborough was the champ in and . At a news conference Thursday Johnson was asked what he was thinking as he approached the day when he could win his third in a row. Well he said first you ve got to do it. And two I don t think I have or any driver has the right to proclaim their spot in history. That s not for that person to decide. That s for the fan base the guys that have done it and are in that club and were accepted into that club. With a healthy point lead Johnson simply needs to finish th or better in a field of on Sunday to assure the championship and! match Yarborough s epic three season run. That makes this entire weekend is almost a formality a coronation for a year old driver who is rapidly moving up the chart of all time NASCAR greats. As he gazed across the room Thursday he saw Richard Petty Bobby Allison Rex White Ned and Dale Jarrett Rusty Wallace Kurt Busch Bobby Labonte and Darrell Waltrip champions all. He paid them respect. I feel I can speak on behalf of a lot of the drivers that these guys are the heroes of the sport and made it what it is today Johnson said. And we ve got a big responsibility on our shoulders to not screw it up and to help it continue to grow. It s a cool sport that we love and we re trying to do our best with it. In second place in this year s battle for the championship is Carl Edwards. Even though his chances of catching Johnson are microscopic he isn t giving up. He figures he might as well take his best shot at what would be his first Sprint Cup title. Edwards knows Jeff Gordon Johnso! n s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports had a motor failure last week at Phoenix. He knows it is possible Johnson could have a similar problem. Or perhaps Johnson could get caught up in an early crash. He also knows that if he finishes worse than third no matter where Johnson finishes the championship will be his. Edwards said the most excruciating thing would be to have bad luck befall Johnson and then not finish well enough to take advantage. So Edwards will focus on his race. We have to go out there to try to win this thing he said and that s our plan to go lead the most laps and win the race. That s what we re hoping for. In the times Johnson and Edwards have raced each other Edwards has never made up points on Johnson in a single race. He did close in points at Homestead in . Have you heard that statistic Edwards asked Johnson. You d better be nervous. This is racing. We ve all raced long enough to know that anything can happen. That s a good confidence booster for me. Because anything can happen Johnson isn t ready to proclaim the champions! hip his. The thing I m focused on the most is how we could lose this championship he said. I feel good about things but at the same time I know that that possibility exists. This is motorsports. Things do happen. Like they say in football you ve still got to go play the game. We ve still got to go run the race. I know that. advertising News Sports Entertainment Living Shopping Classifieds Weather Opinion Obituaries Services Contact Us Terms Conditions Site Map Part of the GatewayVa Network webmasterinrich

Google ramps up defense of Yahoo ad search deal Zd Net Asiacom
The Internet search giant posted an FAQ on its proposed partnership and its affect on advertising prices on its public policy blog Thursday and followed it up with another posting Friday on its potential affect on competition . In both cases Google makes the argument that the deal would not harm competition nor lead to increased advertising prices. But the blog postings were only part of its busy week. On Wednesday Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters during a press conference that the company planned to proceed with the deal in absence of any challenge from regulators . The companies expect to move forward with the deal in the second week of October to mid October one source familiar with their plans said. But what Yahoo and Google have not made clear is what their plans will be should the antitrust division of the Department of Justice or a multi state task force announce plans to challenge the deal by filing a lawsuit to block it or should regulators seek a ! temporary or permanent injunction. The companies for example could demonstrate their resolve and still move forward with the partnership despite knowing it would wrap them in legal wrangling with regulators. Google however said in a statement When we announced our deal with Yahoo we agreed to give the Department of Justice several months to review the deal before we began implementing it and we continue to cooperate with regulators as that process continues. Ultimately we have confidence that they ll be able to conduct their review within that time period and allow us to move forward. And on Tuesday Google s chief economist Hal Varian disputed reports of potentially higher advertising costs should his company do its advertising search partnership with Yahoo in his blog . Such efforts by the Internet giant follow a couple of events last week which may not bode well for its nonexclusive partnership agreement with Yahoo. The Association of National Advertisers announced its op! position to the Google Yahoo deal . And on top of that word began to spread that the Department of Justice had hired seasoned antitrust litigator Sandy Litvack to assess whether a case could be won in trial against the partnership. Morrow nearly makes history for Mariners Forbes
Throwing a diving curveball that had the Yankees flailing foolishly all night long Brandon Morrow pitched about as well in his first major league start as anyone in baseball history. Morrow s bid to become only the second pitcher in modern history to throw a no hitter in his first major league start ended when pinch hitter Wilson Betemit doubled with two outs in the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat New York Friday night. The quiet Californian said he was well aware he was nearing history throughout the game. I mean there s six scoreboards starting me in the face. It s hard not to see he said. The year old righty whose previous big league outings were all in relief blanked the Yankees until Betemit batting for Jose Molina lined a clean drive far over right fielder Ichiro Suzuki other otc SZKMF.PK news people . The hit scored Hideki Matsui who had walked with one out on a close pitch. Morrow angrily barked an expletive at himself as he walked back to the mound. You ! can t do anything but you want that back he said. Bobo Holloman of the St. Louis Browns is the lone pitcher since to throw a no hitter in his first big league start doing it against the Philadelphia Athletics on May . Cincinnati s Bumpus Jones pitched one against Pittsburgh on Oct. and Ted Breitenstein did it for St. Louis of the American Association against Louisville on Oct. according the Elias Sports Bureau. In other AL games on Friday night it was Chicago Los Angeles Minnesota Detroit Toronto Tampa Bay Boston Texas Cleveland Kansas City and Oakland Baltimore . It s been nearly years since the last complete game no hitter against the Yankees Hoyt Wilhelm did it for Baltimore on Sept. . Six Houston Astros pitchers combined to no hit New York at Yankee Stadium on June a game in which starter Roy Oswalt left with a strained groin in the second inning. Morrow left after Betemit s hit on his th pitch and Justin Thomas retired Johnny Damon on a lineout to end the inning. J.J. ! Putz completed the two hitter for his th save in chances. His gem had the home crowd roaring all night for a refreshing change. I was excited. I think the short innings helped he said. You don t have to labor through things. Morrow tried to strike out Betemit with the same new curveball that had fooled Alex Rodriguez Jason Giambi and others all night. It s a pitch he began throwing in game just last month. This time the curveball stayed high and in the middle of the plate. He threw me a changeup a fastball and then a curveball right down the middle. It stayed right in the middle and I swung the bat good Betemit said. Seattle with the worst record in the AL had lost its previous eight games against the Yankees who dropped games behind Boston in the AL wild card race with just games remaining. With just over three weeks left in the regular season it appears the Yankees will miss the playoffs for the first time since . When you have stuff like that and you can locate with that stuff you re going to shut down a lot of lineups Yankees manager Joe G! irardi said. He was electric tonight. Andy Pettitte fading along with the Yankees lost for the seventh time in eight starts since July . He allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings while striking out nine and walking one. We need wins. Losses aren t helping right now Pettitte said. We re running out of options here. Added Girardi Every day we have to win. Obviously the hill gets a little steeper now. Red Sox Rangers At Arlington Texas Josh Beckett struck out seven over five scoreless innings in his first start in nearly three weeks and Mike Lowell came off the disabled list to go for with a homer and four RBIs helping Boston beat Texas. The Red Sox won their fourth straight game to move within games of AL East leading Tampa Bay a loser at Toronto. They remained games ahead of Minnesota in the wild card race. White Sox Angels At Chicago Juan Uribe homered twice Paul Konerko added a solo shot and Mark Buehrle pitched six shutout innings for the White Sox. Chicago di! dn t miss AL home run leader Carlos Quentin who will undergo surgery Monday on a fractured right wrist and could be lost for the season. Blue Jays Rays At Toronto Roy Halladay pitched seven solid innings to win his fifth straight start Alex Rios hit two homers and the Blue Jays extended their season high winning streak to six. Rios hit a solo homer in the third and a two run drive in the eighth for his third career multihomer game and second this season. Athletics Orioles At Baltimore Rajai Davis grand slam was the only Oakland hit in an eight run eighth inning and the Athletics topped the six run barrier for the first time in games. Twins Tigers At Minneapolis Justin Morneau hit a grand slam and Francisco Liriano threw seven plus innings to help Minnesota end a three game skid. Delmon Young also homered and had an RBI double in the seventh to help the Twins score more runs than they did in their previous three games combined in Toronto. Indians Royals At Kansas City Mo.
